Hi I have an old y reg metro 1. Yes it can be done however Plus in later years I could see these climbing a bit in price as they are getting very rare now. I see k3's more often then tidy metty turbo's. Flog yours. Buy a metro turbo instead and then you only have to worry about keeping the thing on the road. You really would be mad to do it, your best bet if youir determined to have a project is to buy a rotten turbo and reshell it in to your car.
Bear in mind you will need to source a turbo gearbox as they are unique to the car, or buy an aftermarket box that will cope.
You will need to buy the unique turbo carb, plenum, turbo and exhaust manifold. You will need to to buy and fit ait must be the low compression engine that is fitted to the low power metro's, not the HC engines fitted to the high spec and MG metro's.
You will then have to find the turbo head with sodium filled valves. To find the above alone and bear in mind you haven't touched brakes, suspension, wheels, turbo piping, oil coolers and turbo oil feed pipe, boost modulator to stop you ripping first and second out, you will be looking at over a grand unless your lucky.
The cheap and easy way to do it is buy a donor car and reshell it in to yours. The sensible way to do it is sell yours on ebay and buy a nice turbo that will appreciate in value. TurboSam 58 posts months. The only minor difference is that the turbo box has a larger bearing in the first motion shaft, which isn't necessary. Also you don't need the 'turbo' head, I don't know of many people who run high power minis and metro turbos with the sodium filled valves.
Again not necessary. But I agree the easiest way is to get a complete turbo lump, with all the bits included. Unfortunately these days they are very expensive! Edited by TurboSam on Thursday 3rd May Given the turbo boxes last about as long as a wet teabag under high pressure when given stick especially when the boost control is circumvented which was put in place purely to prevent them ripping the box out in first and second using a non turbo standard a series box is not a good idea unless you particularly enjoy taking transverse a series in and out.
I don't done it far too many times. The best bet is to use a good tougher box eg. Not cheap however. The sodium valved heads I have used both, my last turbo ran a standard early Mg metro head with the bigger inlets, I didn't burn valves out admittedly.Register a free account today to become a member! 230BHP Turbo conversion...whats the catch (besides the price)
An engine replacement or rebuild is one of the largest and most expensive projects you will undertake on your van. To make your life easier during what can be a difficult decision, we've done the research for you. We specialize in three areas of motors that we believe offer the best spread of performance, reliability, and cost.
We really have "no skin in the game" on any of these and just want to help you make the best decision for you. We require an inspection before undertaking a project like this and we will credit the cost toward the engine work.
Let's do it together. This is most common solution we offer. We build these engines in-house as well as source from the best rebuilders. To be transparent, we tend to be a bit more expensive than other shops - our estimates often include what we consider to be critical and necessary additional work to make sure your new motor not only runs right but is surrounded by functional support systems, most notably your coolant system.
For us, this is a "no-brainer. It is simply not worth the cost savings. These motors are delivered to us brand new, and they fit perfectly into the Vanagon they are motors typically used in the Passat, Jetta, and Golf. They also come with an engine management system and modern electronics.
We are doing more and more of these conversions and are big fans. One of our rental vans has one and you are welcome to come test drive it. Possibly one of the most hyped conversions in the Vanagon world, but with good cause.
We take great care in doing these conversions - your engine bay will look meticulous, you'll have a perfectly crafted wiring harness, the motor will always be "zero mile" freshly rebuilt. We know that we lose quite a few jobs on price, but we simply refuse to do this conversion with short cuts or by not replacing everything.
At this price point you deserve something perfect and that is what we are interested in delivering. It is becoming increasingly difficult to find quality rebuilds, and the only way we can provide you with an engine we trust and will warranty! This is not the cheapest option on the market, but it's the one we believe in. If your budget is tight, we will still try to find a way to work together. Give us a call to discuss or come visit.

Thank you a lot for the excellent service, I really appreciate it!We provided an honest assessment and detailed photos of its condition to aid with the decision making process as Michael was unable to visit us to inspect the Unimog himself.
Michael had seen some Mogs in the USA and had some ideas about the overall look he wanted to achieve. One of the most important things was that we needed to increase the cruising speed and improve the responsiveness of the Unimog for highway driving. We answered all the questions which Michael had there are usually a great many questions where Unimogs are concerned! At an early stage we produced a spreadsheet with clear costings for all the work which on which we had quoted. Having agreed the scope of work one of our first tasks was to remove the cab so that it could be restored off the vehicle.
Where the repair sections were not available we manufactured our own to the same or higher standard as the original. The floor section had to be made from scratch as this section is no longer available from Mercedes. To provide the Unimog with the performance demanded by the owner we fitted a low kms OM engine with our bespoke turbo conversion. The engine produces a reliable HP — approximately double the output of the Unimog from the factory. We fitted a heavy duty lb winch at the front and at the rear in a custom mounting inside the chassis rails.
